What Is an IP Range Library
An IP range library aggregates IP addresses into CIDR blocks by organization, purpose, or region - e.g. 106.11.0.0/16 for a cloud provider or 202.112.0.0/16 for an education network.
Six Common Block Types
- Cloud servers: datacenter IPs with cloud-provider ASNs, used for self-hosting and crawlers.
- CDN nodes: edge caches spread across regions, used for acceleration and scheduling.
- Home broadband: real public IPs dynamically assigned by ISPs.
- CGNAT: shared carrier egress addresses (RFC 6598) that cannot accept inbound connections.
- Education networks: CERNET and campus ranges.
- Proxy nodes: overseas IDC ranges commonly used as relays.
What You Can Do with a Range Library
- Firewall ACLs: allow or block blocks by country or operator.
- Geo-blocking: restrict access from selected regions.
- CDN scheduling: route users to the nearest edge.
- Risk analysis: distinguish datacenter traffic from residential traffic.
