Static vs Dynamic IP: What's the Difference?

Static vs Dynamic IP

A static IP stays the same and is usually provided by an ISP or cloud provider; a dynamic IP changes periodically or after reconnection. Public IPv4 space is scarce, so consumer broadband is dynamic by default.

When You Need a Static IP

No Static IP? Use DDNS

Dynamic DNS (DDNS) binds a domain name to a changing IP: a client reports the new IP regularly and the domain updates automatically. You can reach home devices via a fixed domain even without a static IP - as long as you have a public IP.

Use "My IP" in the toolbox to see your current public IP; check again after a few days to see if it is dynamic. →
